This year I donated four mini-sessions to my son’s school auction and the “E” family placed one of the winning bids. Deciding to beat the Christmas rush, they booked a September session for their holiday portraits in hopes of capturing a photo worthy of their 2014 holiday card.

This marks the fourth annual holiday photo session with Eliza, Dan, and their five-year-old twin daughters, Sonia and Eve. I first photographed this gorgeous duo when they were less than a year old. Today, nearly six years later, it is a pleasure to see how the bond between them has grown and how beautifully complement each other.

These two ladies have entirely different personalities, which becomes more evident every time that we spend time together. Eve, the little lady holding the flower, settled easily into the task at hand, while Sonia yearned to move onto some other activity. Thankfully, Dad saved the day by winning her attention with a steady stream of silly jokes and playful games. I was very impressed with his impromptu comedy and am considering offering him a part time job as my child-wrangling sidekick.

This holiday portraits shoot was held in my backyard and garden, which I think that I may have subconsciously groomed my back yard to serve as the perfect natural backdrop. It is spotted with nice shady corners and rich with lush greenery, much of which consists of beautifully photographic weeds (don’t tell anybody).

The previous day was a scorcher – hot, humid, and upwards of 90 degrees. Thankfully, that sultry summer humidity broke overnight and gave way to a gorgeous fall day perfect for hosting a family portrait session outdoors.

As a family photographer, I feel that it is such a privilege to work with the same family year after year and to participate – albeit in a small way – in their lives and the changes that they go through with the passing of time. Unfortunately, Sonia and Eve have moved to a new school across town, which means that our paths won’t cross in the carpool lane or at school events. In any case, I wish them a wonderful year at their new school and I hope to see them again next year!
