About

Julie Kubal was born and raised in New York City. She graduated from the United States Naval Academy with a BS in Astronautical Engineering and served as an officer in the U.S. Navy for eight years. During that time, she lived in Spain and worked in the Balkans and the Middle East. Julie left the Navy in 2004 to pursue a career in photography. She graduated from the Documentary Photography and Photojournalism Program at the International Center of Photography in June 2005.

Julie is an alumna of the Eddie Adams Workshop where she was awarded a photo internship at the White House. Additionally, Julie was selected as a 2006 summer fellow at the Poynter Institute to study community beat reporting. Her work has been published in Newsweek, The New York Times, The Miami Herald, The Orange County Register, and The Fader, among others.

With the birth of her son in April 2008, Julie has shifted gears, turning her photographic eye toward children and families while still remaining true to her background in documentary work. She applies that eye towards capturing not just single images of her subjects, but a series of images that tell their story.
