Some more new year’s wishes

I designed this card in honor of Eve and Sonia’s first birthday with new year’s wishes from the whole family. Not quite a birth announcement, nor a holiday card, nor an invitation, the theme required a unique design. With some collaboration with mom, I think we came up with just the right thing.

TinyPrints.com just released their latest set of great holiday card templates, an exclusive set of 24 designs available only to professional photographers, printed on thick card stock made from recycled paper. These cards are not publicly available on their website so you can only access them by clicking on the banner below.

In addition, if you order your cards from this collection, you’ll get priority customer service and a free digital proof before the order is printed. I’ll take care of uploading the image for you so you won’t have to hassle with proper image specifications.

If you would like to use one of the templates from this collection, I will waive the digital negative fee. For other Tiny Prints templates outside of this collection, the digital negative fee will still apply. Please refer to my product guide for digital negative pricing.

If you would like to use images from a past session for holiday cards, there will be no fee to unarchive images.

This offer is available to all of my regular clients AND all mini-session clients.

Holiday mini-sessions

For those of you who are interested in having just the right photograph for your holiday cards this year, I am offering special mini-sessions packages.

What are mini-sessions you ask? Unlike my usual sessions that last about 2 hours, the mini-session will be half an hour with the aim of creating the perfect images to share with family and friends for cards and holiday gifts.

The mini-sessions will be held on Saturday, October 10 and Saturday, October 24. I’ll choose the location (still TBD – considering the Arboretum, plus an indoor location in case of bad weather – but I promise it will be lovely!) and half hour back-to-back time slots will be available  for which you may sign-up from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. If these times don’t work well for your baby’s nap time, I may be able to make adjustments to the times based on availability. Please contact me as soon as possible to reserve your time.

If you’ve already got your favorite picture selected and you’d just like to order cards, please see this post for details.

Like last year, you also have the option of ordering your cards from TinyPrints.com at a discount through my blog. This year TinyPrints.com is making available an exclusive set of 24 designs available only to professional photographers. These cards will not be publicly available on their website. I’ll be posting a link to these options on my blog in a few weeks, so be on the lookout for more details.

The mini-session packages are $250 and will include the following:

  • 30-minute session
  • 7-10 images uploaded to private online gallery
  • $150 credit towards holiday cards, prints, or other products (see this post for exclusive card designs that I offer)
  • 1 picture for use with Tiny Prints ($50 value)
  • payment due in full at time of booking

Holiday Cards

This year I’m excited to offer a beautiful selection of holiday card templates. There are 10 options for flat cards and 5 options for folded cards. Designs for flat cards may be used for folded cards with a blank inside. Cards are printed on a watercolor textured paper and come in sets of 25, including envelopes. Text may be customized for your personal message. These designs are only available to professional photographers so you won’t find them through other photo card retailers.

4.5×5, 5×5, or 5×7 folded $100 for the first set of one design, $80 for each additional set of the same design.

Stay tuned! I’ll be offering holiday mini-session in October this year. Sessions will be 30 minutes and include a set of holiday cards. More details to come, but feel free to contact me beforehand if you’re interested in signing up or if you want more info.

The session album

I got my first sample album in the mail a couple of weeks ago and finally had a chance to take some pictures of it to post here. I am so pleased with the quality of the book. Each one is custom made from scratch with your choice from over 40 fabrics for the cover. I picked a red suede-like (Garbo Red Carpet) material for the sample to compliment the the images from this particular session. It’s gorgeous! The albums can be ordered in three different sizes: 5×5, 8×8, and 12×12 and contain 30 images (more pages may be added for an additional charge).

I just wanted to post some ideas for multi-image layouts that I recently presented to Cecelia’s parents. Plus it’s a good excuse for me to show off more images from this shoot. It’s so tough to narrow it down to just a few; I have so many favorites! Back in my photojournalism days, editing and sequencing photos was an important part of presenting the work. I try to bring that same eye to designing these layouts so that the images really compliment each other.

Storyboards and collages can be designed to fit a variety of sizes and numbers of images. The two below are sized to be printed on a single 10″x30″ sheet.

A new client said to me recently that once she saw the photos I shot of her friend’s baby she would never again be satisfied bringing her daughter to a department store portrait studio. Then she called me to set up her own shoot, ready to make the investment in custom photography.  If you are reading this blog, chances are you already appreciate the difference between my photography and Sears portraits. If you’re still wondering “how in the world can you charge $40 for an 8×10 if it costs me less than $2 to print at the local drug store?”,  read on. The answer also applies to the question of why many custom photographers do not provide digital files to their clients, which I address on my own website .  I encourage anyone with these questions to read the full Consumer Guide for Custom Photography, written by Chicago photographer Marianne Drenthe. Here is an  excerpt from the article that gives a great explanation of the custom photography experience:

The customized service level you are sure to experience will be amazing.  The knowledge that your final images are the result of someone caring about those moments so much that they take extra time ensuring that the artwork you receive is good enough to stand by with their name on it.  That level of quality and commitment  is all but lost in the age of “mass produced,” “mass marketed,” corporate “everyone is a number”.  Custom photography is based on being unique to you.  How great an experience would be,  to be able to sit back and allow a photographer to do this highly custom work for images that you will most likely cherish for a lifetime?

I have an assortment of new products of which I’m slowly ordering samples. For the fine art canvas gallery wraps, I just had to use this image. It looks gorgeous (if I do say so myself). For a detailed description of gallery wraps, check out this post.

The light in my son’s room is amazing. I took the original photo featured on the canvas print in this exact spot, and took this photo of Sasha again to show the scale and because I just LOVE this light! Maybe I’ll do a whole series here (just like Stephen Colbert’s portrait within a portrait ;-) ).
