There is no question that the blossoming cherry trees around the Tidal Basin are beautiful to behold, but each year during the peak season when the Cherry Blossom Festival takes place, I’m overcome with lethargy by the idea of battling crowds and traffic to see them in person. Yet, whenever I actually do get to photograph during the very short peak period, I am so grateful that I’ve had a reason to compel me to be there.
With DC’s wacky weather this year, the cherry blossoms peaked very early in conjunction with almost a full week of cold rain until one lone sunny Friday followed by predictions of a rainy weekend. Luckily, that was the day that my session was scheduled with Christina, Bryan, and kids Emma and William. Last time I saw William he was only 6 months old. Now he’s an active three year old with sweet 8 month old sister Emma. We did manage to find our own tranquil spots, surrounded by the magnificent sea of pink blossoms where it was easy to forget the hundreds of other people milling about just out of view.

I still have some sessions from 2012 that I didn’t get a chance to post yet. Even though all of these clients have seen their images, it’s always nice for anyone who’s curious to be able to look through the blog and see all the kids I photographed represented. So, without any further ado, here are Arabella and Walt and their lovely parents!

When I first met Benjamin’s parents, they described their little guy as a super smiley baby. On the day of our session, it was clear he wasn’t his usual cheerful self and we decided to call it quits a bit early. His mom told me later that he spiked a high fever shortly after we wrapped up. Even though I knew we captured some lovely pictures of him that morning, I didn’t want mom and dad looking back at the images only to be reminded of how sick Benjamin was that day. So I came back a couple of weeks later for a redo. Sure enough, he proved to have one of the best smiles of any baby I’ve ever photographed with a huge grin in every single picture. Actually the selection of images below are a mix from both the first and second takes, but I don’t think anyone but mom, dad, and me can tell which ones are from the day he wasn’t feeling well.

What can I say? Is she cute or is she cute? Baby M was so easy going that we managed 3 or 4 outfit changes, lots of smiles and barely any fuss. And at the end, she declared us done by laying down on the couch and promptly falling asleep before I could even pack up my camera bag.

Catching up on my last session before Thanksgiving. There were so many great images from this session that is was difficult to choose what to post here. Isabella was an enthusiastic model, and eventually, little brother Kellen warmed up too. It was great working with mom, Paola, who is an interior designer and owner of Creative Elegance Interiors and has a great instinct for color. We talked about coordinating clothing colors during our planning consultation and I knew Paola would come through with something creative that looked great without having everyone wear matching shirts

Presenting the lovely Lucy with sparkling blue eyes. It was a pleasure to meet her and her parents. Keeping this post short, but sweet since it’s after midnight. Enjoy!

I’m so excited about the results of my third session with Tyler. Mom had one traditional holiday outfit and one very hip outfit for him, which provided some nice contrast for the images. It was fun to see him with even more personality and longer hair and walking and climbing with more confidence. Thankfully he’s not yet running too fast for me! Take a look back at our first and second sessions to see how much he’s grown. Looking forward to our fourth session in a few months.

As every parent knows, your baby will always keep you on your toes. You can think he’s settling into a knowable sleep routine, only to have him remind you that routine is overrated.
I usually plan to start infant photo sessions right after nap time with the hope of a nice big chunk of “quiet alert” time in which to capture the baby’s personality. Baby L had napped before my arrival, however he let us know that he still needed some beauty sleep (growth spurt?), so mom coaxed him back to sleep until he was ready to sport some smiles at the very end. I was relieved that both mom and dad went with the flow and trusted that we’d still get great images, which I think we did!

Last time I photographed Tyler was back in April. He is now crawling (very fast I might add), has a lot more hair and new chompers, and still sports a winning smile. I once again braved scorching summer weather to do a session outside, but we managed to finish up and head back inside before the heat got too unbearable. Our location this time around was another lovely DC landmark, The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial, located within Judiciary Square.
