I wanted to share photos from a fun project I worked on a few of months ago with Pleasance Silicki, the founder of Lil Omm yoga studio. I first met Pleasance almost three years ago when we were both new moms with new small businesses and we became friends as our personal and professional paths kept crossing. Since we serve a similar clientele, it only seemed natural to find ways to collaborate. So when Lil Omm moved to their current digs at 4708 Wisconsin Avenue NW, we decided to team up to make large scale prints to decorate the new space. Pleasance suggested inviting several yoga instructors to participate in the photo shoot so that the images would represent the big family of adults, kids, and even pets that is Lil Omm. Below are some of my faves. I’m so thrilled with how the whole project came out and to have my work featured there.
Lil Omm started out as a place where families (and more specifically moms and kids) would be welcome to practice yoga, take classes, and find community. It continues to expand its offerings with Pleasance working tirelessly to make Lil Omm an extraordinary resource. Go check out Lil Omm and see for yourself what an amazing place it is!

There is no question that the blossoming cherry trees around the Tidal Basin are beautiful to behold, but each year during the peak season when the Cherry Blossom Festival takes place, I’m overcome with lethargy by the idea of battling crowds and traffic to see them in person. Yet, whenever I actually do get to photograph during the very short peak period, I am so grateful that I’ve had a reason to compel me to be there.
With DC’s wacky weather this year, the cherry blossoms peaked very early in conjunction with almost a full week of cold rain until one lone sunny Friday followed by predictions of a rainy weekend. Luckily, that was the day that my session was scheduled with Christina, Bryan, and kids Emma and William. Last time I saw William he was only 6 months old. Now he’s an active three year old with sweet 8 month old sister Emma. We did manage to find our own tranquil spots, surrounded by the magnificent sea of pink blossoms where it was easy to forget the hundreds of other people milling about just out of view.

I still have some sessions from 2012 that I didn’t get a chance to post yet. Even though all of these clients have seen their images, it’s always nice for anyone who’s curious to be able to look through the blog and see all the kids I photographed represented. So, without any further ado, here are Arabella and Walt and their lovely parents!

When I first met Benjamin’s parents, they described their little guy as a super smiley baby. On the day of our session, it was clear he wasn’t his usual cheerful self and we decided to call it quits a bit early. His mom told me later that he spiked a high fever shortly after we wrapped up. Even though I knew we captured some lovely pictures of him that morning, I didn’t want mom and dad looking back at the images only to be reminded of how sick Benjamin was that day. So I came back a couple of weeks later for a redo. Sure enough, he proved to have one of the best smiles of any baby I’ve ever photographed with a huge grin in every single picture. Actually the selection of images below are a mix from both the first and second takes, but I don’t think anyone but mom, dad, and me can tell which ones are from the day he wasn’t feeling well.

Like most schools in the area, my son’s preschool holds an annual fundraising auction. What better way for me to help in the effort (and help my son in the process) than to donate a gift certificate for a photo session and lovely gallery wrap. In an amazing coincidence, the family who won the certificate (who are from Maryland and are parents to the lovely school-aged girl below) happen to be good friends with another of my fave clients (who live in Virginia and are parents to a one-year old) and bid on my session without realizing that I was the same photographer who had photographed their friends. It must have been fate!
Last Saturday evening at the appointed time, we had just enough of a break in the hot, steamy weather (if you can count a drop in humidity and a few degrees to the low-90s as a “break”) to proceed. I know Hannah was looking forward to her photo shoot. With tree climbing and bubble blowing, she was a trooper in spite of the heat and the late hour.

It was with great excitement and joy that I finally got to spend time again with my dear friend and her adorable 4-month-old baby boy, both of whom I had not seen since he was about a week old. We’d been planning to do a photo session together since before he was born and we wanted to wait until it was warm enough to keep him outside comfortably. I don’t make it home to New York City very often anymore so our opportunities have been few and far between. As luck would have it, the weather didn’t cooperate and we only had about 20 minutes of shooting time. On the other hand we got to spend several hours just hanging out and being together (which was not nearly enough time). Luckily, I’ll have many opportunities in the years to come to make more images of him starting with another session in the next few months when he’s able to sit up on his own. Love you, Faryu!!!
