I photographed Aven and family for the first time one week shy of exactly one year ago. It was great seeing the transformation from little baby to little girl (toddler?). She was on the move throughout the whole session, but slowed down just enough to “smell the flowers,” or more like pull petals off of flowers, in her family’s beautiful garden. Luckily, there was such an abundance of beautiful flowers that I don’t think the petal pulling will be discernible. I hope.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Each week when we go into the forest in Rock Creek Park, we’ve observed the gradual onset of autumn. This last week almost all of the leaves had finally fallen off the trees and had turned brown, blanketing the ground: evidence that fall is fully here and that winter is just around the corner. With every step I marvel that we have access to such a huge wooded area right in the middle of the city. It’s the best of both worlds!

I’ve had a handful of reminders lately of how small the parenting community of DC is. One occurrence recently was when talking to a new client, Sarah, about planning a maternity session, she mentioned the street she lives on, which happens to be right near where I used to live. She then proceeded to tell me that she’d like to include her 2 and a half year old son in the session, and maybe get some pictures with their beloved nanny as well. Two and a half year old son? I also have a two and half year old son. I ask his name and lo and behold, it’s Gibran! I know him! And I know his lovely nanny too! We were in Miss Amy’s music class together. For months, we went to Mother Goose on the Loose at the Watha T. Daniel-Shaw Library together. And we also frequented all the same playgrounds. It was so nice that Gibran was able to think of me as Sasha’s mom rather than as a random new adult. Looking forward to a second session together when baby brother arrives!

Nirvaan

Nirvaan, whose name is Sanskrit for “ultimate bliss,” was 10-days old when I photographed him and his parents last week. He has a most impressive shock of spiky punk rocker black hair and likes to sleep with his arms above his turned head. Both awake and asleep, he was peaceful throughout our entire photo session.

…so I’m posting an example of the kind that I like best. This is a really nice candid moment.

My new favorite

I was looking through my archives and came across this little gem, which looks like an oil painting to me. It’s my new favorite. sasha_019
