#1 – Bishop’s Garden at the National Cathedral: One of My Favorite Photo Locations in Washington, DC
This garden is adorned with beautiful flowers most of year. It has an large expanse of grass where kids can run, a gazebo, as well as plenty of shady spots.
#2 – Meridian Hill Park
Meridian Hill Park makes for a wonderful backdrop for photos. Additionally, it’s a great place to spend a leisurely afternoon. The park design was inspired by the gardens of an Italian aristocrat’s private residence. It is so large that there is something to explore around every corner with over a dozen giant stone fountains, pools, historic architecture, and more.
#3 – Mount Pleasant Library
Washington DC’s historic Mount Pleasant Library is the third oldest public library still in use in the city. It is also architecturally stunning with an interesting modern addition. The building faces north, meaning that the majestic stone facade and stairway are always bathed in soft, indirect sunlight – a photographer’s dream. Not to mention that when you’ve finished snapping pictures, you can step inside and visit what I believe is one of the best children’s book collections in all of the city!
#4 – Your Local Washington DC Playground Makes a Great Location for Photos!
Neighborhood playgrounds are familiar turf and they generally make your kids feel comfortable as they engage with their surroundings. As soon as you see your children settling into their natural rhythm of play, take a step back and start snapping away. Personally, one of my favorite spots is Westminster Playground, an urban greenspace settled into a gorgeous neighborhood.
Know before you go:
Before heading out to any of these photo-friendly locations in Washington DC, there are a few things you’ll need to keep in mind:
- Double check that your camera is fully charged.
- Be sure you have a safe place to store your purses/bags so your hands are as free as possible to manage the camera.
- Avoid places with construction or other hazards that may be unsafe should your children wander while you’re occupied with the camera.
