Photograph the Family Home Before Moving to Preserve Memories
One of my top recommendation to preserve family memories is to have an in-home photo session. Imagine how you will feel in the years to come when you look back at pictures of your first baby asleep in the nursery that you painstakingly painted and decorated. What about photos of your toddler wearing nothing but a saggy diaper while standing on a stepstool to “wash” dishes at the kitchen sink? (Can you tell that I’m describing a scene in my own home?)
For families that relocate while the kids are still young, having those pictures is priceless. In-home photos become the only means by which to remember their childhood home. This is what the Kelly Family had in mind when mom Jessica contacted me in the fall of 2015. The goal of the session was to capture the essence of their family at their home in Dupont Circle before moving on to bigger and better things.
I originally met Jessica when we partnered for an event along with Marissa Flower. Marissa was the owner of the Cleveland Park location of Gymboree Play and Music. She provided classroom space for my Snap Happy: Photo 101 class. At that time, Jessica was the Washington DC Community Manager for UrbanSitter. She arranged for UrbanSitter to provided complimentary childcare for parents attending my class. While their parents learned tips and tricks to take better pictures of their little ones, the sitters kept the kids busy with fun activities.
Family Needs More Space ASAP with Addition of Twins
After the addition of twins Juniper and Dylan last year, the family made plans to move to a much larger home accommodate the now much larger crew. Unfortunately, with building delaysHowever with building delays, they needed to vacate their old home before the new one was ready
As luck would have it, they found a place to rent on short notice, and suddenly their plans to move became a reality. Jessica realized they needed to capture memories of the home where their children first lived before it was too late. She also wanted to take pictures of the twins before they turned one. I’m so pleased she called on a whim to see if I was available to preserve this special memory for them.
One of the exciting things for me, was the challenge of photographing a family with four children. It was fun capturing everyone together and alone in the short time we had, and I’m very pleased with the results. It’s still going to be a little while before the Kelly family moves into their permanent home, but they’ll be able to look back at these photos with fond memories.
