1. Sibling Photography with The Poole Twins
I first laid eyes on this adorable twin duo when I photographed them as newborns. As the first set of twins I ever photographed, they hold a special place in my heart. These fraternal twins have always looked very different, yet this brother and sister have an undeniable bond. It’s one of the reasons I love photographing siblings—there’s something unique about their connection. I conducted this photo session at my own home, taking photos in my yard, on the porch, and even in the alleyway behind the house. I refer to the alley as my “secret” spot because though a little unkempt, it always looks amazing in photos. The twins’ mom was a little skeptical about that location until she saw the results. When she reviewed the photos she said, “I LOVE them. Wow—you’re not kidding. Your alley photographs very well.” Click here to see more incredible photos of the Poole twins from other photoshoots!
2. The Gray Family Brother and Sister Duo
I love it when I’m given the opportunity to get to know a family through multiple sessions in a year. Not only is it a joy for me to be a witness to the many transformations the children go through in a year, but it allows the kids to get to know me, too. When kids are more comfortable, there’s a noticeable difference in their interactions with each other and with me. For this third session, Mom wanted to continue her biannual sessions documenting siblings Austen and Carolina as they grow up.
Another advantage to working with the same family multiple times is that we usually choose different locations each time. Most initial photo sessions with clients take place in their homes, which makes perfect sense—it’s where kids are most in their element. So, my previous sessions with the Gray Family were taken in and around their house.
Since this was our third photo session together, mother Awo suggested we meet this time at a park, the Forestville Schoolhouse. It was a great choice, too, since it gave plenty of room for the kids to run around and find their own groove. Plus, the log fence and the fall foliage provided a nice backdrop for the shots.
Awo is always careful about choosing just the right outfits for the kids; with formal attire for part of the time, and a quick change in to casual clothes for the other part. Though the weather during this fall afternoon was a little gloomy, the temp was comfortable. The kids didn’t seem to mind the overcast day one bit and had a fun time hanging out and climbing on the fence.
3. Big Sister and Little Brother with The Wisniewski Family
The Wisniewski sibling photoshoot is a great example of in-home photography. Jessica (Mom) joined my Snap Happy class in September and wanted to capture some great shots of her kids. Since we scheduled the photo session in February, we didn’t plan to do anything outside. Luckily, the interior of their home had plenty of natural light and I only needed to supplement with artificial light in a handful of the photos.
Photographing two-year-old Amelia with her baby brother, Hank, was a chaotic, but very fun experience. Amelia with her beautiful red hair and sparkling personality went from being hesitant to showering Hank with big, loving hugs (a little too big at times!). Hank, full of cheer, had a natural spark that is noticeable in every photo. This session was an excellent example of how sibling photography is able to capture both the love and individual personalities of each child.
In the end, mom and dad opted for two large matted and framed prints for their bedroom—one of each child, of course. They also chose a smaller photo of each kiddo to hang on the door of each child’s bedroom—a really fun way to use the photos. They also purchased a gift album and several smaller prints for other spots around the house and for their offices.
