The Beauty in Sibling Photography Sessions

PIn this post, I’m excited to share some of my favorite sibling photography sessions. Photographing siblings is always a joy, especially with the incredible children of my longtime clients. Each session is unique, making it a fun and creative experience. I’ll highlight some standout sessions, sharing how the shoots went, how families have used the photos, and offering inspiration for capturing sibling bonds in a meaningful way.

1. The Poole Twins

I first photographed this adorable twin duo when they were newborns, and I instantly fell in love. They were my very first set of newborn twins, making them extra special to me. Every time we meet, I’m amazed by how much they’ve grown. Despite being twins, they look very different, but their bond is undeniable. It’s one of the reasons I love photographing siblings—there’s something unique about their connection. For this shoot, we gathered at my house, taking photos in my yard, on the porch, and even in the alley. Sometimes, the simplest locations create the best photos! The kids were in great spirits. I had fun showing them my new “secret” spots. Even though the alleyway is a little messy, it always looks amazing in photos. I reassured their mom, and when she saw the results, she said, “I LOVE them. Wow—you’re not kidding. Your alley photographs very well.” That it certainly does. 😉 The family chose some of the photos for holiday cards and gifts this year. 2. The Gray Family

I love it when I’m given the opportunity to get to know a family through multiple sessions in a year. Not only is it a joy for me to be a witness to the many transformations the children go through in a year, but it allows the kids to get to know me, too. When kids are more comfortable, there’s a noticeable difference in their interactions with each other and with me. For this third session, Mom wanted to continue her biannual sessions documenting siblings Austen and Carolina as they grow up.

When you get to work with a family a number of times, it’s fun to have the opportunity to take photos in a brand new location. Most of my clients’ photo sessions take place in their homes, which makes perfect sense – it’s where kids are most in their element. So, my previous sessions with the Gray Family were taken in and around their house. Since this was our third photo session together, Awo suggested we meet this time at park, the Forestville Schoolhouse. It was a great choice, too, since it gave plenty of room for the kids to run around and find their own groove. Plus, the log fence and the fall foliage provided a nice backdrop for the shots. Awo is always careful about choosing just the right outfits for the kids; with formal attire for part of the time, and a quick change in to casual clothes for the other part. Though the weather during this fall afternoon was a little gloomy, the temp was comfortable. The kids didn’t seem to mind the overcast day one bit and had a fun time hanging out and climbing on the fence.

3. The Wisniewski Family

The Wisniewski sibling photoshoot is a great example of in-home photography. Since it was February, we didn’t plan to do anything outside, and luckily, the interior of their home had plenty of natural light and I only supplemented artificial light in certain circumstances.

Jessica (Mom) joined my Snap Happy class in September and wanted to capture some great shots of her kids. Photographing a two-year-old with her baby brother, Hank, had its surprises! Amelia, the big sister, went from being hesitant to showering Hank with big, loving hugs (a little too big at times!). Despite the playful chaos, some of my favorite shots were individual portraits of each child.

Amelia, with her beautiful red hair and sparkling personality, was a joy to photograph. I love the shot of her on the carpet and the whimsical one of her in the orange chair with a lollipop. Hank, full of cheer, has a natural spark in his photos, especially one in front of the fireplace with his adorable grin. Another reason why I like photographing siblings, is that you are able to capture the unique differences between the pair. I think that this photo session is an excellent example of how sibling photography is able to capture both the love and individual personalities of each child. In the end, mom and dad opted for two large matted and framed prints for their bedroom; one of each child, of course. They also chose a smaller photo of each kiddo printed with their first initial for each of their bedrooms, which is a really fun way to display photos in kids’ rooms, plus an album and several smaller prints for other spots around the house and for their offices. To see another A+ sibling photoshoot, click here!
